Why has my range hood fan stopped?

A hood fan that has gone silent is usually the motor, the speed control or the switch. Grease is the common thread: it works into the motor bearings over years and eventually stops them.

  • Capacitor failed on larger motors
  • Control board fault on touch-controlled hoods
  • Wiring connection corroded in a humid kitchen

Why is my range hood not pulling smoke away?

Weak extraction is usually the filters and the duct, not the fan. Grease-saturated mesh filters cut airflow dramatically, and a recirculating hood with an exhausted charcoal filter moves air without removing anything at all.

Likely causes

  • Mesh grease filters saturated — the most common cause by a wide margin
  • Charcoal filter exhausted on recirculating hoods
  • Duct run crushed, too long, or full of grease
  • Exterior damper stuck shut
  • Hood mounted too high above the cooktop to capture effectively

Why are my range hood lights not working?

Hood lights fail at the lamp, the socket or the switch. On LED hoods the whole light board is often a single assembly, so the cost depends heavily on which design you have.

Likely causes

  • Bulb failed — the obvious one, worth checking first
  • Socket corroded or heat-damaged
  • Light switch failed
  • LED driver or light board failed on newer hoods
  • Wrong bulb wattage fitted previously, cooking the socket

We check the socket and driver rather than just fitting a bulb, because a heat-damaged socket kills the next bulb too. Correct bulb type goes on the invoice so a future replacement does not repeat the mistake.

Bulbs and sockets are inexpensive. LED assemblies on premium hoods cost considerably more.

Why is my range hood rattling or vibrating?

Rattle in a hood is usually loose mounting, an unbalanced fan wheel, or a damper flapping in the duct. All three are inexpensive to resolve, and all three get worse if left.

  • Mounting screws loosened by years of vibration
  • Fan wheel unbalanced by grease buildup
  • Backdraft damper flapping in the airflow
  • Filters not seated properly in their runners
  • Duct section loose at a joint

Range Hood Repair questions

Ducted or recirculating — which should I have?

Ducted removes cooking air from the home and is always better where it is possible. Recirculating filters air through charcoal and returns it, which is what most condo installations have to use. If your hood recirculates and the charcoal filter has never been changed, it is filtering nothing.

How often should grease filters be cleaned?

Monthly for regular cooking. Mesh filters go through the dishwasher on a hot cycle, or soak in hot water with degreaser. A saturated filter cuts extraction dramatically, and it is the first thing we check when someone says the hood has lost power.

How high should a range hood be mounted?

Generally 65 to 75 cm above an electric cooktop, per the manufacturer specification for your model. Mounted too high, a hood cannot capture what it is meant to capture no matter how strong the fan is — and no repair fixes a mounting-height problem.

Can you replace just the motor rather than the whole hood?

Usually yes, provided the part is still available for the model. On built-in and premium hoods that is normally the sensible route, since replacing the hood means matching the cabinetry cutout. We confirm parts availability before quoting.
