Why is my oven not heating up?

An electric oven that will not heat has usually lost the bake element, the temperature sensor or a leg of its 240V supply. A failed bake element is often visible: look for a blister, a split, or a bright burn mark along the loop.

Likely causes

  • Bake element burned through — frequently visible on inspection
  • Oven temperature sensor open circuit, reported as an F-code on many models
  • One leg of the 240V supply lost at the breaker — the oven lights up but never heats
  • Control board relay failed
  • Thermal cut-out tripped after a self-clean cycle

What we do

We check the supply at the appliance first — a half-tripped double breaker imitates a dead oven perfectly and costs nothing to fix. Then the element and sensor go on the meter. A visibly burned element is a same-visit repair; our vans carry the common sizes.

What affects the cost

Bake elements and sensors are inexpensive with quick labour. Control boards on built-in premium ovens are the expensive end by a wide margin.

Why does my oven bake unevenly?

Uneven baking is usually calibration drift or a convection fan that has stopped circulating properly. An oven within about ±10°C of its setting is considered normal — beyond that, the sensor or the calibration needs attention.

Likely causes

  • Oven calibration drifted with age
  • Temperature sensor reading low or high
  • Convection fan motor slow or seized
  • Door seal letting heat escape from one side
  • Racks positioned wrong for the dish, or the oven overloaded

What we do

We log actual temperature against the setpoint through a full cycle with an independent probe — a single spot reading tells you nothing about how an oven behaves. Then we recalibrate, replace the sensor, or address the fan, depending on what the log shows.

What affects the cost

Calibration is labour only. Sensors are inexpensive; convection fan motors are mid-range.

Can a burned-out oven element be replaced?

Yes, and it is one of the cheapest and most satisfying repairs in the kitchen. A failed bake or broil element usually shows a visible burn, blister or break, and on most ovens the swap takes well under an hour with the oven working again the same visit.

Likely causes

  • Element failed at the end of its service life
  • Element damaged by spilled liquid or aggressive cleaning
  • Terminal connection burned at the rear of the element
  • Broil element failed while bake still works, or the reverse

We replace the element and inspect the terminal block behind it, because a burned connection will destroy the new element too. Part numbers go on your invoice so the next technician is not guessing.

Why will my oven door not close properly?

An oven door that sits proud at the top or will not latch has worn hinges or a stretched seal. It is worth fixing promptly: a door that does not seal wastes heat, bakes unevenly, and lets the outer panel get dangerously hot.

Likely causes

  • Door hinges worn or bent, often from leaning on an open door
  • Door gasket hardened and no longer compressing
  • Door lock motor stuck mid-travel after a self-clean cycle
  • Inner glass panel shifted out of position

What we do

We replace hinges as a pair — a new hinge working against a worn one puts the door back out of alignment within weeks. Gaskets are replaced with the correct profile for the model rather than a universal strip.

What affects the cost

Hinges and gaskets are moderate parts. Door lock assemblies are inexpensive. Replacement glass on a premium range is the costly exception.

What does the F-code on my oven mean?

F-codes point at the control system: F1 and F1 E1 are the control board, F3 and F4 are the temperature sensor, F5 is the door lock, and F2 usually means a stuck touchpad key. A stuck key is worth trying yourself — clean the panel and cut power for five minutes.

Likely causes

  • Temperature sensor open or shorted (F3 / F4 on most brands)
  • Control board failure (F1)
  • Door latch not confirming (F5)
  • Stuck key on the touch panel (F2)
  • Over-temperature condition, often after a self-clean cycle

We verify the code against actual sensor resistance rather than trusting the display, because a failing board reports sensor faults that are not there. Our brand pages list the eight codes we see most for each manufacturer.

Sensors and latches are inexpensive. A control board is the expensive outcome, and on a built-in wall oven it is the part that decides repair versus replace.

Is the self-clean cycle bad for my oven?

It is hard on it. Self-clean runs the cavity far above normal cooking temperatures, and that heat is what kills control boards, thermal fuses and door latches — we get a noticeable run of these calls after holiday cooking. If you use it, run it well before you need the oven, not the night before.

How accurate should my oven temperature be?

Within about ±10°C of the setting is normal and will not ruin your baking. Beyond that, calibration or the sensor needs attention. An independent oven thermometer left through a full preheat and hold tells you far more than the display does.

Do you repair gas ranges?

We handle the electrical side — igniter modules, spark systems, control boards, sensors and convection. Gas line and burner work is a separate licensed trade, and we say so plainly rather than taking a job we should not.

Can you repair built-in wall ovens?

Yes, including double wall ovens in renovated kitchens. These are heavy units fitted into cabinetry, so removal takes two people and extra time — we schedule for that rather than turning up and discovering it.

My oven works but the display is dead. Is that repairable?

Usually yes. Display failures are often the control board or its ribbon connection rather than the whole assembly. On premium built-ins we check whether the board can be repaired or reflashed before quoting a full replacement, because the part alone can run into four figures.
