Why is my dryer running but not heating?

A dryer that tumbles without heat has usually lost its heating element or tripped a thermal fuse. Thermal fuses do not fail randomly — they blow because airflow was restricted, so replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means you will be calling us again shortly.

Likely causes

  • Thermal fuse blown, almost always caused by a blocked vent
  • Heating element burned through
  • Cycling thermostat or high-limit thermostat failed
  • Only one of the two 120V legs reaching the dryer — a breaker issue, not a dryer fault
  • Control board no longer calling for heat

What we do

We check the supply voltage first, because a half-tripped double breaker mimics a dead element exactly and costs you nothing to fix. Then we test the element, thermostats and fuse — and we clear the vent, because a fuse that blew once will blow again if the airflow is still restricted.

What affects the cost

Fuses and thermostats are inexpensive; elements are mid-range. Vent cleaning is included as part of the diagnosis rather than billed as an extra.

Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry one load?

Long drying times are an airflow problem, not a heat problem. Lint accumulates along the duct run, moist air cannot leave, and the load simply stays damp. In townhouse rows and high-rises with long duct runs this is the single most common dryer call we attend.

Likely causes

  • Vent duct packed with lint along its length
  • Exterior vent flap stuck shut or blocked by a bird nest
  • Crushed flexible duct behind the dryer
  • Lint screen coated with fabric-softener film — invisible but airtight
  • Blower wheel damaged or loose on its shaft

What we do

We measure airflow at the exterior vent, clear the full duct run rather than the first metre, and check the blower wheel. Then we show you what came out — it is usually persuasive on its own about why this matters.

What affects the cost

Vent cleaning is the low end and often the whole fix. Blower wheels and housings cost more but are rarely needed if the vent is kept clear.

What is making my dryer squeal or rumble?

A squeal that rises and falls with the drum is the drum support system: rollers, the idler pulley or the belt. Left long enough, a seized roller wears a flat on the drum and turns a small repair into a large one.

Likely causes

  • Drum support rollers worn or seized
  • Idler pulley bearing failing — the classic rhythmic squeal
  • Drive belt frayed and slipping
  • Blower wheel loose on the motor shaft, giving a rattling rumble
  • A coin or button in the blower housing — noisy but harmless

What we do

We open the cabinet and turn the drum by hand: a bad roller is obvious the moment you feel it. Rollers get replaced as a set, because replacing one of four just means being back here in a few months for the next.

What affects the cost

Rollers, belts and pulleys are inexpensive parts with straightforward labour — one of the better-value repairs we do.

Why will my dryer not start at all?

A completely dead dryer is usually electrical: the door switch, the start switch, the thermal fuse or the supply. Check that the door clicks firmly shut before anything else — a worn door switch is both the most common cause and one of the cheapest fixes.

Likely causes

  • Door switch worn, so the machine never sees the door as closed
  • Start switch failed
  • Thermal fuse blown, cutting the circuit entirely on some models
  • Breaker tripped or one leg of the 240V supply lost
  • Drive motor seized

What we do

We work the circuit from the outlet inward with a meter instead of swapping parts hopefully. Motors are the expensive outcome and the rarest one, so we rule out everything cheaper first.

What affects the cost

Switches and fuses are inexpensive. A drive motor is the costly end, and on an older dryer it is where replacement starts to make more sense.

My dryer smells like burning — is it dangerous?

Stop using it. A burning smell from a dryer means lint is in contact with something hot, and lint fires are a real cause of house fires in Canada. Unplug the machine and call us — this is the one dryer fault we treat as an emergency rather than a booking.

Likely causes

  • Lint accumulated around the heating element or in the duct
  • Blower housing packed with lint against a hot surface
  • Motor windings overheating
  • Belt slipping against a stationary drum
  • Electrical connection arcing at the terminal block

What we do

We treat this as urgent. The machine is fully opened, all lint is removed from the element housing, blower and duct, and every electrical connection is inspected for heat damage before the dryer goes back into service.

What affects the cost

Often the fix is thorough cleaning plus a damaged component or two. What it should never be is postponed.

Dryer Repair questions

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Once a year for most households, twice if you dry several loads a day or the duct run is long — which describes most high-rises and townhouse rows in the GTA. Lint accumulation is both the leading cause of long drying times and a genuine fire risk, so this is maintenance worth actually doing.

Why does my dryer keep blowing its thermal fuse?

Because the airflow is still restricted. The fuse is a safety device doing its job: it blows when the machine overheats, and it overheats because hot moist air cannot escape. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent guarantees a repeat, which is why we do both on the same visit.

What is different about heat-pump dryers?

They run at much lower temperatures, do not need an external vent, and dry more slowly by design — so "it takes longer" is often normal rather than a fault. When they do fail it is usually the condenser or the drain system, and diagnosis follows a completely different path from a conventional dryer.

Can you repair a stacked dryer in a condo?

Yes, constantly. Stacked pairs need the unit brought forward to reach the rear panel, so we allow extra time. Tell us it is stacked when you book and we schedule accordingly instead of running late for the next customer.

Do you work on gas dryers?

We handle the electrical side — motors, switches, thermostats, boards and vent work. Gas line and burner work is a separate licensed trade, and we will tell you plainly when a job needs one instead of improvising.
