Why is my freezer not staying frozen?

A freezer that runs but drifts warm has usually lost airflow or is fighting a failing start component. A freezer should sit at about −18°C; anything consistently above −12°C means food quality is degrading even if nothing is visibly thawed.

Likely causes

  • Condenser coils blocked with dust, so heat cannot escape
  • Evaporator fan seized on upright models
  • Start relay or capacitor failing, so the compressor cannot run properly
  • Door seal letting warm air in continuously
  • Thermostat or thermistor out of range

What we do

We log the actual internal temperature against the setting, check current draw at the compressor and inspect the coils. On chest freezers we also check the drain plug seal, which people rarely think about and which lets in a surprising amount of warm air.

What affects the cost

Coil cleaning, seals and relays are the low end. Sealed-system work on an older freezer is where replacement usually wins, and we will say so.

Why is my freezer frosting up?

Heavy frost means moisture is getting in or the automatic defrost has stopped working. On a frost-free unit, a solid sheet of ice on the back wall points at the defrost heater, thermostat or timer — not at how often you open the door.

Likely causes

  • Defrost heater failed, so ice never clears from the evaporator
  • Defrost thermostat or timer no longer cycling
  • Door seal worn or door not closing fully, letting humid air in
  • Drain tube frozen, so meltwater refreezes instead of clearing
  • Manual-defrost chest freezer simply due for a defrost

We identify which defrost component failed rather than replacing the set. Then we clear the drain path — a blocked drain turns every defrost cycle into a new sheet of ice, so leaving it means the fault returns within weeks.

What affects the cost

Defrost heaters, thermostats and timers are inexpensive to moderate parts. Clearing a drain is labour only.

Why is my freezer leaking water?

Water at the base of a freezer is almost always a blocked defrost drain: meltwater has nowhere to go, so it overflows into the cabinet and onto the floor. In a finished basement this is worth treating quickly.

Likely causes

  • Defrost drain tube frozen or clogged
  • Drain pan cracked or dislodged
  • Door seal failing, creating constant condensation
  • Unit out of level, so meltwater runs the wrong way

What we do

We clear and flush the drain, verify it stays clear through a full defrost cycle, and level the unit. Where the drain froze because of a defrost fault, we fix that too — otherwise you get the same puddle next month.

Usually a low-cost visit. Where a defrost component is behind it, add the part.

Why is my freezer clicking on and off?

A rhythmic click every few minutes with no cooling is the classic failing start relay: the compressor tries to start, cannot, overheats, cuts out and tries again. It is an inexpensive part and a fast repair — but the clicking should not be ignored, because the compressor is being stressed each time.

Likely causes

  • Start relay or capacitor failed
  • Compressor windings degraded
  • Overload protector cutting out from restricted airflow
  • Control board cycling incorrectly

What we do

We meter the relay and compressor windings before replacing anything. If the windings test bad, the honest answer on an older freezer is replacement, and we say it rather than selling a compressor job that costs more than the appliance.

What affects the cost

Relays are inexpensive. Compressor replacement rarely makes financial sense on a freezer outside warranty.

How do I know if my freezer door seal has failed?

Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull. If it slides out freely, that part of the seal is not sealing. A failed gasket costs you constant frost, higher running costs and a compressor that never gets a break.

Likely causes

  • Gasket hardened with age and no longer compressing
  • Gasket torn or pulled loose at a corner
  • Door out of alignment, usually from being loaded heavily
  • Hinges worn so the door sits proud at one edge

What we do

We fit the correct gasket profile for the model and realign the door, because a new seal on a misaligned door leaks in exactly the same place. The paper test gets repeated all the way round before we call it done.

Gaskets are moderate parts with straightforward labour, and the running-cost saving is real.

Freezer Repair questions

How long will a freezer hold food without power?

About 48 hours if it is full and stays shut, and roughly 24 hours if it is half full. Keeping the door closed matters more than anything else you can do. Food that still has ice crystals can be refrozen; food that has warmed above 4°C for more than two hours should go.

Chest or upright — which is more reliable?

Chest freezers have fewer components to fail and hold temperature better during outages, because cold air does not fall out when you open the lid. Uprights are easier to live with and mostly fail on defrost components and door seals. Neither is dramatically better; the trade-off is convenience against resilience.

My basement freezer failed and I did not notice for days. What now?

If the food thawed and sat above 4°C for more than two hours, it goes — no exceptions for meat or dairy. Then let us look at why it failed, because a freezer that has been struggling quietly for weeks usually has a defrost or airflow fault that will repeat with the next load.

Is it worth repairing a freezer?

For defrost components, seals, fans, relays and thermostats — yes, comfortably. For sealed-system or compressor work on a unit over ten years old, usually not, and we tell you before you spend anything beyond the diagnostic.

Do you repair freezer drawers in built-in refrigeration?

Yes. Freezer columns and drawers in Sub-Zero, Thermador and Miele built-ins are regular work for us, and on dual-compressor systems the freezer side can fail while the fridge side runs perfectly normally.
