LG Washer Error Codes: What They Mean

LG washers are among the most repairable machines we work on, largely because their fault codes are specific. Where some brands give you a generic error, an LG usually tells you which subsystem is unhappy — and that makes the difference between a targeted repair and an expensive guess.

There is one code worth knowing about before all the others, because it is the one that costs people the most money unnecessarily.

LE — the code that gets misdiagnosed

LE means the motor is locked or overloaded. Search it and you will find forum threads confidently declaring the motor dead. On direct-drive LG machines, that is usually wrong.

These washers use a rotor position sensor — a hall sensor that tells the inverter board where the rotor actually is. When it degrades, the board loses track of the motor and reports exactly what it sees: a motor that will not turn as commanded. The sensor is a fraction of the price of the motor.

The tell is the pattern. A failed motor is dead every time. A failing sensor produces intermittent LE errors that come and go for weeks and gradually get worse — which is precisely what most people describe when they call us.

Before assuming the worst:

1. Run a smaller load. An overloaded drum triggers LE legitimately.
2. Check nothing is jammed between the drum and the tub.
3. If it clears with lighter loads but returns eventually, ask for the sensor to be tested.

We wrote up a Willowdale job where exactly this happened — the owner had been quoted for a motor and needed an $88 sensor.

Water supply codes

IE — not filling

Water is not arriving fast enough. Check both taps are fully open, then the mesh inlet screens where the hoses connect to the machine. Sediment clogs those gradually, which is why the fault turns up on a machine that has worked fine for years.

If the screens are clean, the inlet valve is the next suspect.

1E, dE1 — variants

Depending on generation these indicate water level or door lock conditions. Power-cycle first, then treat as below.

FE — overfilling

Water above the maximum level. The machine will attempt to drain automatically. If it recurs, the inlet valve is not closing fully or the pressure sensor is misreading. Do not keep running it — an overfilling washer is a flood waiting for the right moment.

Drainage codes

OE — not draining

The most common LG code after LE, and the one most often solved without us.

Behind the small door at the bottom front is the drain pump filter. Drain the water into a shallow tray, unscrew the filter, and clear it. Expect coins, hairpins and lint. Refit firmly — a loose filter cap leaks.

If OE returns with a clean filter, the pump has failed or the drain hose is kinked behind the machine. Both are straightforward repairs.

Door codes

dE, dE1, dE2 — door lock

The machine cannot confirm the door is locked, so the cycle never starts. Open and close it firmly, and check nothing is caught in the seal.

Persistent dE on a properly closed door means the lock assembly has failed. It is an inexpensive part with quick labour.

If the door will not open and there is water in the drum, drain through the filter hose first — many doors release once the water is gone, because the lock stays engaged by design while the drum is full.

Balance and vibration

UE — unbalanced load

The drum could not distribute the load, so the machine declined to spin at full speed. Redistribute by hand. Single heavy items are the usual cause: one bath mat, one pair of jeans, nothing to balance against.

Also check levelling. A washer that is not level triggers UE repeatedly and, in a condo, transmits vibration through the floor to neighbours who notice before you do.

Temperature and sensor codes

tE — temperature sensor out of range

The thermistor is reporting a temperature the board does not believe. Needs testing.

PE — pressure sensor fault

The water level sensor or its hose. Also a technician job.

HE — heater fault

The water is not reaching temperature. The machine may still run cold cycles normally, which tempts people to ignore it, but a degrading element can eventually trip a breaker.

Refrigerator codes worth knowing

LG owners often have more than one LG appliance, so two fridge codes are worth including:

• ER-CO — compressor communication error. Check your warranty first. LG extended coverage on linear compressors across many models, and if yours qualifies the honest answer is to go through LG rather than pay anyone.
• ER-FF — freezer fan fault, usually ice around the fan blade or a failed motor.

We check compressor warranty status before quoting anything on an LG fridge. Losing that job is better than charging you for something the manufacturer owes you.

Quick reference

When to call a pro

Anything involving the motor circuit, heating, sealed refrigeration or a sensor needs measuring rather than clearing. So does any code that returns after the checks above.

What we would ask is that you try the filter, the taps and the load first. Those three account for a real share of the LG calls we take, and clearing one yourself costs you nothing.
