The call
A Willowdale condo, four-year-old LG front loader, stopping partway through the spin cycle and showing LE. The owner had searched the code, found a forum thread confidently declaring it a failed motor, and had already been quoted for one by another company. They called us for a second opinion, which was the right instinct.
The pattern they described mattered more than the code. It had started intermittently — a fault once a week, then twice, and now most cycles. Between failures the machine behaved perfectly, and a smaller load would sometimes complete without complaint.
That is not how a failed motor behaves. A dead motor is dead every time.
Diagnosis
LE on an LG direct-drive machine means the motor is locked or overloaded. Two things can produce that reading: the motor genuinely cannot turn, or the rotor position sensor — the hall sensor that tells the inverter board where the rotor actually is — has degraded to the point where the board loses track of it.
The sensor fails far more often than the motor it reports on. On these machines it is the single most common cause of an LE code, and it costs a fraction of the price.
We worked through it properly rather than assuming:
- Drum turned freely by hand — no bearing drag, no obstruction
- Load size irrelevant on test cycles; it failed on an empty drum too
- Motor windings measured within specification, all three phases balanced
- Rotor position sensor output erratic under rotation, dropping out intermittently
That last reading is what settles it. A sensor producing a clean signal at rest and a broken one under load explains everything the owner had described, including why it started intermittently and got worse.
The fix
Rotor position sensor replaced with the LG part. Twenty minutes of actual work once the rear panel was off, and the sensor is an $88 component.
We deliberately did not touch the motor. It tested fine, and replacing a healthy motor on a sensor fault is an expensive way to not fix anything — we have been called out to correct exactly that situation on other machines.
Then a full test: an empty spin at maximum speed, followed by a normal load through a complete cycle. No LE, no hesitation, no unusual noise. Seventy-five minutes on site including the testing, which on an intermittent fault is not the part to rush.
Outcome
The machine has run normally since. The owner’s original quote had been for a motor and labour at several times what this cost.
I nearly bought a new washer because a forum said the motor was gone. Turned out to be a sensor the size of my thumb.
The lesson generalises beyond LG: an intermittent fault is diagnostic information. Components that have failed stay failed. A fault that comes and goes, or that worsens gradually, usually points at something degrading rather than something dead — and degrading components are almost always the cheaper end of the parts list.
If your LG shows LE, try a smaller load first, because an overloaded drum triggers it legitimately. If it returns on normal loads, the sensor is where we would look before anyone quotes you a motor.
