How Long Do Appliances Last in Canada?

Appliance lifespan is one of those numbers everybody quotes and nobody sources. The figures below come from what we actually see across Toronto and the GTA — which machines we are still repairing at fifteen years, and which ones we are advising people to replace at eight.

Dishwashers being the shortest-lived major appliance surprises people. They run hot water, detergent and food debris through pumps and seals several times a week — it is a harsher duty cycle than anything else in the kitchen.
What shortens appliance life in Canadian homes
Hard water. GTA tap water leaves scale on anything that heats. Dishwasher heating elements, washer heaters and ice maker lines all suffer, and the effect is gradual enough that people blame detergent for years before suspecting the water.
Restricted airflow. Two versions, both expensive. A refrigerator condenser packed with dust makes the compressor work harder on every cycle. A dryer vent full of lint makes the machine overheat repeatedly. Both shorten life measurably, and both are preventable with a vacuum.
Tight installations. Appliances need clearance. Older kitchens have alcoves built for smaller units, and newer condos have cabinetry built to the millimetre. A fridge or an induction cooktop with nowhere to shed heat ages years early.
Power events. Control boards do not always recover cleanly from flickers and surges. In older buildings this is a genuine factor, and a board that needs a power-cycle to behave more than once is telling you something.
Overloading. Washers and dryers are rated for a load size, and consistently exceeding it wears bearings, belts and suspension faster than anything else you can do.
Self-clean cycles. Worth naming specifically. Self-clean runs an oven cavity far above cooking temperatures, and the heat kills control boards, thermal cut-outs and latch motors. We see a distinct run of these calls after every major holiday.
The maintenance that actually adds years
Most appliance maintenance advice is padding. These five items are the ones that genuinely change the number of years you get:
- Vacuum the refrigerator condenser, twice a year. Ten minutes, no tools beyond a vacuum and a screwdriver for the grille. This is the single highest-value maintenance task in the house, and on built-ins it is worth booking as a service.
- Clear the dryer vent, once a year. Twice if you run several loads a day or the duct run is long — which describes most townhouses and high-rises. It shortens drying times immediately and removes a genuine fire risk.
- Clean the dishwasher filter, monthly. It lifts out by hand. Two minutes under a tap prevents most of the drain faults we attend.
- Leave the washer door ajar between loads. Costs nothing, and it prevents the front-load odour problem almost entirely.
- Use rinse aid. In hard water it measurably slows scale on the dishwasher heater and spray jets.
Everything else — descaling cycles, gasket wiping, levelling checks — is worth doing but sits a tier below these.
When an appliance is telling you it is near the end
Repeat repairs. Two major repairs in two years is a pattern, not bad luck.
Rising running noise. Bearings and motors get louder before they fail. That noise is the cheap warning.
Longer cycle times. A dryer taking two cycles or a dishwasher running longer than it used to is usually airflow or scale — fixable. If it persists after both are addressed, components are tired.
Control board quirks. A machine needing a power-cycle to behave is a board on its way out.
Rust at seams or around the tub. On washers and dishwashers this is structural and not economically repairable.
The honest summary
Most appliances are worth repairing for most of their lives. The exceptions are narrow and predictable: sealed-system work on old refrigeration, bearings on old mid-range washers, and anything on a countertop appliance.
