Our laundry centre is in a Guildwood basement with a low doorway. Does it have to come out?

No, it stays where it stands. The console lifts off and the front panel comes away, which puts the belt, blower wheel, element, lid switch and drain pump within reach from the front. We need the load out and about a metre of clear floor. Nothing is tilted through a doorway or carried up basement stairs, which is what most Guildwood owners are quietly dreading when they ring.

The unit is fourteen years old. Is it worth repairing?

That depends on which part failed, not on the year. Boards, switches, belts and heating parts are still stocked for these cabinets, and fitting one to a machine with a sound tub and a solid base is money well spent. Where we stop is a cracked outer tub, a seized transmission or a base rusted through. Replacing the whole cabinet costs more than replacing a standalone washer.
